Framework for Internal IT Service Pricing with ITIL Compliant Rollup

Dwight Schlenker, Manager of Computer Services Business Planning
United HealthGroup IT

Drawing on experience with the IT managed services cost recovery design at United HealthGroup and GMAC ResCap, this session proposes a generic reference framework for "housing" IT Service chargeback items. Focus is on "data center dwelling" IT services of the sort that are usually provided to support business applications. The framework also presumes that services are generally built using consumption-based metrics. Topics include: (1) scoping the cost recovery domain, (2) handling labor-driven vs. non-labor-driven cost basis portions, (3) calculating the cost basis for service groups, (4) pricing individual service items, (5) providing ITIL compliant cost rollup to business applications, (6) building invoices and inputs to financial GL entry systems, (7) reporting on service "profitability" and other measures of progress, and (8) fitting this framework into a larger IT cost management lifecycle (budgeting, demand management, cost recovery, accounting, etc).

Leveraging ITIL & Activities Based Costing for Service & Process Improvement

Marcus Murph, Senior Manager
KPMG IT Advisory Services

ITIL provides a standard framework for IT operations and a path forward to service and process improvement, but its implementation alone does not address the key concern IT executives face today: how to effectively manage costs while driving the quality improvements in services that business customers demand. Other critical questions that must be answered include:

• How do we justify the cost of ITIL implementation?

• How do we measure the benefits of process and service improvement initiatives in ways understood by both our organization and our customers?

• How do we value our services in order to take advantage of industry standards through benchmarking?

Combining Activity Based Costing techniques with industry standard frameworks such as ITIL gives your organization the ability to quantify and optimize its people, processes, and technology while evolving your service management capabilities.
