Historic District & Carriage Ride

Charleston was ranked as one of the top three travel destinations in the U.S. along with New York City and San Francisco. It is considered one of the best foodie cities in the USA, famous for its low country cuisine and bevy of trendy restaurants. It is also known as America's "most polite city." Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. This is a city known for its history, forts, beautiful gardens, plantations, Low Country cooking, pastel-colored row houses, moss-draped trees, upscale shopping, galleries and antique shops. Charleston is most famed for its aristocratic and elegant historic structures. The city has 6,200 historic buildings in the National Register of Historic Landmarks with 3,500 structures built before the Civil War. Charleston really is a compact walking city and you can stroll through the one-square-mile District in a few hours.

A one-mile section of Meeting Street, where the Francis Marion Hotel is located, is Charleston's Museum Mile, which features the richest concentration of cultural sites open to visitors in downtown Charleston. Stroll the one-mile strip and you will discover six museums, five nationally important historic houses, four scenic parks, numerous historic houses of worship, and six historic public buildings including the Old Market and City Hall. Enjoy the Mile by foot or public transportation.
Free DASH Shuttle to Historic Districts

There are plenty of free ways to enjoy the charm, culture and history of Charleston.
Free downtown shuttles: There are five shuttle routes in the Charleston downtown area. CARTA bus passes include the DASH trolleys and allow you to get on and off as often as needed. DASH routes connect with CARTA serving North Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and Kiawah Island. The DASH shuttle schedule for the Meeting/King stop, just steps from the Francis Marion Hotel, is M-Su 8am-6:30pm.
The Battery: walk the stretch along the city's southern tip, which they call beautiful and a must-visit. This row of Southern-style mansions overlooking Charleston Harbor was formerly the heart and soul of the city's maritime activity.
Walking tours: With its centuries-old mansion and cobblestone streets, Charleston is like a living museum. One of the best ways to learn about its history (and its ghosts) and the significance of its best-known landmarks is on a walking tour, e.g., city's historic downtown district. Maps are available at the Visitor’s Center or Google “Charleston Walking Tour Map.”
City Market: A few blocks from the Francis Marion Hotel is Charleston City Market, considered a great glimpse into life in the Old South where food was purchased for the plantations. Today, the market buzzes with residents and visitors alike, perusing stalls loaded with toys, clothes, leather goods and regional souvenirs. But if you plan on buying anything here, you should head straight to the "basket ladies." These women (and men) have been weaving baskets for centuries – this craft originated in West Africa and has been passed down through the generations – using local materials, such as sweetgrass and palmetto leaves.
