Nearby Attractions

Hacienda Hotel is within walking distance of Old Town’s dining and shopping hub dominated by Mexican fare, specialty shops, and three nearby parks – Heritage Park known for its Victorian architecture, Presidio Park offering some of the best views in the city, and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.

Old Town San Diego is considered the “birthplace” of California when it began with little more than a mission and fort 250 years ago. San Diego is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement in California. It was here in 1769, that Father Junipero Serra came to establish the very first mission in a chain of 21 missions that were to be the cornerstone of California’s colonization. Father Serra’s mission and Presidio were built on a hillside overlooking what is currently known as Old Town San Diego. At the base of the hill in 1820’s, a small Mexican community of adobe buildings was formed and by 1835 had attained the status of El Pueblo de San Diego.

Today, Old Town is one of San Diego’s most popular and significant attractions. It is a lively and expansive park, with shops, restaurants, museums and historic sites – many of which are free to explore. Be sure to visit the Bazaar del Mundo, Old Town Market, and Fiesta de Reyes for truly unique shopping experiences. The brave hearted can also visit the Whaley House, known as the most haunted place in the nation with countless documented paranormal experiences.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, a National Historic Landmark, gives visitors free access and a taste of San Diego’s Native American, early pioneer, and Latin American cultures and tells the story of its historic roots from the 1821 to 1872 period. The park includes a main plaza, exhibits, museums and living history demonstrations. The carefully preserved architecture, more than one hundred specialty stores, thirty restaurants, twelve art galleries, and 25 historic sites and buildings that make up Old Town offer an experience you won’t soon forget. Historic buildings include La Casa de Estudillo, La Casa de Bandini, La Casa de Altamirno Pedrorena and the Mason Street School, San Diego’s first one room schoolhouse, five original adobe buildings, a working blacksmith shop, the park's burros and live music.

Just a one-minute walk up the hill from Old Town San Diego Historic State Park, you’ll find Victorian Heritage Park where several of San Diego’s most notable historic Victorian homes have been relocated and authentically restored to their original splendor. Just a short walk down San Diego Avenue is the Whaley House Museum, an officially designated haunted house, the Little Adobe Chapel on Conde Street, the first Church in Old Town San Diego and El Campo Santo on San Diego Avenue, a 1850 Catholic Cemetery.

Presidio Park, a 10-minute walk from the hotel, sits high on Presidio Hill behind and above Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. It was the location of Royal Presidio of San Diego, the first European settlement on the U.S. West Coast in 1769. Today, the popular 40-acre park is a California Historical Landmark and is divided into four distinct areas: Inspiration Point, Palm Canyon, Padre Cross, and The Arbor. Junipero Serra Museum and Presidio Park Mormon Battalion Monument can both be found in Padre Cross.

You are also just a 2-minute walk from the San Diego Old Town Trolley Tours depot, where you can take a number of great tours including Old Town Trolley’s Hop On Hop Off Tour. This tour is the perfect way to maximize your time and get around San Diego. The trolley loops 25 miles and stops at 10 locations across San Diego including museums, beaches, historic sites, shops and restaurants. A short ride away are Little Italy, Seaport Village, Gaslamp Quarter, SeaWorld and the beach. Mission Bay is a 35-minute walk from the hotel.

Other nearby attractions are: Fashion Valley Shopping Mall (10 Minutes), San Diego Zoo & Balboa Park (10 minutes), San Diego Padre’s PETCO Park (15 minutes), Tijuana, Mexico (30 minutes), San Diego Safari Park & Legoland (45 minutes)
